Playing around a bit with processing – I found something to like in both the bright colors of the first photo and the black and white treatment of the second photo.

What is it??? Layers of canvas draped on the stairs leading to the second floor of our house.  Fabrics offer such great textural opportunities for photographing.

You just know the temperature was cold with that crisp blue sky and the icicles forming on the edge of the roof.

Circles, Lines, Blocks… random shapes in the snow that captured my eye.

Works in more ways than one – it’s a recycled picture of recycled cardboard.  I’ve liked this picture for it’s texture and pattern ever since the day I took it – I should have used it for this theme way before now.

One of the last remnants of the construction shots…  This shot of a pair of blue rubber gloves has patiently been waiting for it’s turn to be posted.   The gloves had casually been left laying on the cardboard but the bold blue and white with the “slashes and splatters” of the brown kraft of the torn cardboard caught my eye.  They almost have the appearance of a modern art painting with the bold, contrasting colors and expressive patterns.

I altered this theme just a little – we’re almost done with the renovations so no relaxation yet, but soon.  You saw the shower with the beer shelf in the Accessories shot.  This is my soaking tub.  I suppose I should have filled this tub with bubbles and filled the wine glasses too, to really capture the theme.  Perhaps a follow up shot to come….

This portion of an old pallet (part of the construction debris) wasn’t too interesting until I started viewing portions of it thru the lens, and I focused on the two holes (for today’s theme) and the negative space created by the opening between the boards.  Playing with some pre-sets I decided I liked how this one (PH_Fog_Killer) increased the texture and made the black space more prominant, playing up the holes and open space.  I’m especially fond of the small cross beam that breaks through the black vertical space – something about the way it introduces a horizontal line to further separate the two holes is appealing to me.

These tools have been floating around the floor for a few weeks now, and I think they are starting to feel a bit unloved and neglected.  They had spackling compound on them for awhile, and while some has been scrapped off I think they could use a bit of TLC.  Clustered together like this on the floor they caught my eye because of the variety of shapes, angles and colors.  Despite their neglect, they get their 15 minutes of fame in today’s post.

I confess… I like tools.  Not just “tools are OK” but “I really, really like tools”.  I can easily spend an hour or more wandering up and down the aisles at hardware store.  I spent 45 minutes picking out a 4-foot level just so I could hang my curtain rods.  It’s a really pretty blue and it feels good in your hand – every girl should have one.  I’m fascinated by specialty tools that do precision work, or just make a process easier.  I’m convinced that if you just had the right combination of tools in your arsenal everything in your life would work properly (I’m still searching for that right combination).  This tool has been visiting us and I’m drawn to it every time I walk upstairs with my camera.  I like the angled lines on the worktable, and the little pan of water and the bright orange color, but most of all I think I like the name… Tile Master – it just seems to convey power upon the user – if you own this tool you will be “The Tile Master!”

Edited to answer Ellen’s question – I think I have figured out the perfect combination – just 3 things.  All I really need is a plate of cookies, a checkbook, and my contractor Joey.  He comes with his own tools, he tells me he can do anything, and it’s so much easier!

What am I going to do for subject matter once the construction is done?  These little “X’s” for spacing the tiles caught my eye for the Multiples theme.  I thought they were even more interesting once I’d applied a preset (PH_Naturally_BW) which darkened the edges bringing the focus to the subject.

I spotted this “Circle” upstairs a few days ago and decided tonight to see how many circles I could find upstairs among the construction flotsam and jetsam.  Once I started looking around I found at least a dozen – some more interesting than others but at least a few that yielded photos that deserved a second look.  Always a good photo exercise when one is at a loss – to select a single theme and seek out multiple examples.

… I couldn’t resist another shot to go with yesterday’s photo.  Why?  Because today I found another lost and forlorn item abandoned among the tools… this time the cell phone, left behind on the workbench.

I played a bit with Solarizing just to see the variation too.  The colors are a bit strong for my taste, but I did like the way the black cell phone popped out from the colors – seemed to isolate the phone nicely.

Today I was torn between two photos (a good problem to have) but then I was reading Janet & Dave’s blog and Janet’s commentary on LR presets and I had to check them out.  This photo was a contender for the “Abandoned” theme but was a clear winner once I used the Antique Greyscale preset.  Another construction shot – our contractor’s glasses left on the table.  This is only the most recent of a long list of items that have been left behind and retrieved at a later date.

I had a few photos that were contenders for today, but I settled on this one because there were some elements of composition I really liked – the color contrast, the bold black arc sweeping through the photo and the arrow focusing on the Zero.  I debated with myself about eliminating the small black area in the lower left wondering if it was a distraction, but when I tried to visualize the photo without it I found it lacking, and I ultimately decided that it underscored the zero, trapping it between the black line and the pointy arrow.

OK, it’s not an accessory in the traditional sense, but this granite shelf (that’s propped up with a piece of wood right now) is a shower accessory of sorts.   One of the elements I really wanted in our renovated shower was a seat – so handy for numerous reasons.  My husband just doesn’t understand the need so I told him this little shelf is for his beer, and our contractor told him the seat is to hold the cooler.  I’m not sure, but I think he’s coming around…

Here’s an updated shot – not grouted yet, but the glass tile and chair rail are in place – I added a beer bottle to his shelf to demonstrate that it does work perfectly!

This morning I had the opportunity to spend a few minutes in the yard taking some photos of the fresh snowfall.  The gutters on the new dormer are not yet complete so we have boards propped against the house to divert the water that streams from the open end of the old gutter when it rains.  Covered with sparkling white snow and crystal clear icicles it almost looks pretty.

What will I do for subject matter when the construction is done?  It’s providing a wealth of topics to photograph.  These wires for the thermosat, in bright colors against a stark white wall, made me think of a modern art painting – a splash of paint agains a white canvas.

Who would think there are so many shades and variations of “White” paint.  Tinted with a hint of yellow or tan, grey or green, pink or blue.  I have to pick the paint for the bedroom walls, bathroom walls, wood trim and doors and I must have a hundred or more samples of tans and whites with various tints.  Now the job of narrowing them down….

These are the tiles for our master bathroom renovation – sort of…  Someone had offered me the creamy white wall tiles only to find out they had been stolen from the storage warehouse after I’d purchased everything else, so I’m searching for a substitute.  The small glass tiles will be a border between the creamy wall tiles and the limestone chair rail.  The wood is a sample of our vanity and they are all sitting on a sample of the floor tile.  It’s starting to come together and I’m getting excited to see my vision come to life.
